CAMBRIDGE — A 47-year-old Cambridge man has been charged with trying to kill a woman.
A man was initially charged with weapon and assault offences in connection an incident Saturday at a Cambridge home; but Waterloo Regional Police, including officers with the domestic-violence unit, decided this week to lay an additional charge of attempted murder.
“During the course of the investigation police learned more about what transpired and made the decision to lay the additional charge,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.
Police allege the man and an adult female, who is known to him, got into a dispute at a Cambridge residence during the afternoon of July 17. Police allege the man then left the house and returned with a firearm.

The woman ran to a neighbour’s house and police were called.
Officers arrived and made an arrest. They searched the area and seized a firearm. The woman received minor injuries in the struggle.
To protect the woman, Heinzel said police are not releasing information about her, including her age or address.
Jose Melo is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, using a firearm while committing an offence, careless use and storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault, assault with a weaon and uttering threats.
He is expected to appear in Kitchener court Thursday.
