KITCHENER — A Cambridge father has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his infant daughter.
Sean Michael Summers, 19, was arrested on an aggravated assault charge on July 10, a day after his four-month-old daughter was taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital with injuries.
Kayleigh Ingram-Summers was transferred to Hamilton General Hospital, where she died July 12.
Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel said the new charges are a result of a lengthy police investigation and preliminary autopsy results.
Summers is now charged with second-degree murder, and two counts of assault. One of the assault charges relate to a previously unreported incident involving the child.
The other relates to a report made involving an adult.
Summers appeared briefly in a Kitchener courtroom Friday morning. His case was adjourned until late July.
Family members were present in the courtroom.
Heinzel said investigators, including members of the homicide team and Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region, are continuing to look into the circumstances that led to the death of the baby.
Police have said the baby’s parents do not live together.
